چکیده

*The karyotypes of Malagasy geckos are poorly known. Herein, we describe the karyotypes of two Malagasy gecko species, Paroedura picta and an undescribed or currently unrecognised Paroedura species. These are the first karyotypes described for the genus Paroedura. Each species had a distinct karyotype; P. picta had 2n!36 and Paroedura sp. had 2n!34. We used a fragment of the mitochondrial ND2 gene to conduct a phylogenetic analysis of 17 described and putative Paroedura species and show that the Paroedura sp. examined here is unique and related to P. bastardi, P. ibityensis, P. tanjaka and another undescribed Paroedura species from Tsingy de Bemaraha. Our results highlight the need for continued research into the basic biology and taxonomy of Malagasy lizards.

Molecular phylogenetic relationships among species of the Malagasy-Comoran gecko genus Paroedura (Squamata: Gekkonidae).

We use approximately 3100bp of mitochondrial (ND2, ND4) and nuclear (RAG1, phosducin) DNA sequence data to recover phylogenetic relationships among 14 of the 16 recognized taxa of the lizard genus Paroedura as well as two undescribed forms. These geckos are endemic to Madagascar and the Comores and are popularly kept and bred by herpetoculturalists. The closest relative of Paroedura is another ...

A new species of Lygodactylus (Squamata: Gekkonidae) endemic to Mount Namuli, an isolated 'sky island' of northern Mozambique.

A new species of high elevation dwarf gecko (Gekkonidae: Lygodactylus) is described from Mount Namuli, northern Mozambique. This new species is distinguished from other closely related species in the genus Lygodactylus by body size, scalation, and color, and is genetically divergent from congeners. The species is most similar genetically and morphologically to Lygodactylus rex, the King Dwarf G...

Incubation temperature modulates post-hatching thermoregulatory behavior in the Madagascar ground gecko, Paroedura pictus.

All vertebrates regulate body temperature within narrow limits, regardless of their physiological capabilities. When do these limits develop, and can they be modified by manipulations of the developmental thermal environment? We addressed these questions by incubating the eggs of the Madagascar ground gecko, Paroedura pictus, at three temperatures and by assessing thermoregulatory behavior in h...

Burmese Hemidactylus (Reptilia, Squamata, Gekkonidae): Geographic Variation in the Morphology of Hemidactylus bowringii in Myanmar and Yunnan, China

Six species of the gecko genus Hemidactylus are reported currently from Myanmar. This genus, in the family Gekkonidae, is the most geographically widespread and one of the most speciose. Morphological analysis within one Burmese species, H. bowringii, is concordant with the geographic pattern of genetic differentiation revealed by Carranza’s and Arnold’s (2006) phylogram based on mtDNA sequence...
